Foundations for Farming

/ ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
Foundations for Farming is an initiative aimed at bringing transformation to individuals, communities and nations through faithful and productive use of land.

Foundations Zambia started in February 2012 when Ben and Cat Frampton were sent from Foundations for Farming’s head office in Zimbabwe to Mkushi. They were commissioned with the vision of serving into the Mkushi area and setting up a National Centre of Excellence which would serve the rest of Zambia.

Foundations Zambia work to inspire and equip people to be faithful stewards of the resources God has given them through teaching  foundational biblical principles of stewardship in the areas of Farming, Finance, and Family that bring life and life in abundance.

These life-giving principles are being taught through Foundations Groups in villages, workplaces, schools and youth groups. The established Centre of Excellence on Chengelo Training Farm in Mkushi is already making a significant impact on the lives of farmers in the area.

/ ABOUT OUR PROJECT

Pfumuvdza is an initiative aimed at helping farmers feed their families from a fraction of land they traditionally plant by teaching them sustainable farming techniques and good management principles.

Pfumvudza, meaning ‘new season’ in Shona, focusses farmers on intensifying their maize production on small areas, which significantly reduces their inputs costs, but dramatically increases their yields. In 2020 the Zimbabwean government adopted the Pfumvudza concept and in one season quadrupled their national production and fed itself for only the second time in 20 years

Pfumvudza has been promoted in Zambia for 10 years from the national Foundations for Farming stewardship centre in Mkushi with great success, but in the face of rapidly rising fertiliser prices the time has come to share the concept more widely across the nation.

Our project will design and manage a dedicated website that will help farmers across the country implement the principles of Pfumvudza and start the journey to a sustainable farming future.

The website will not only provide videos and downloadable instructions in the major Zambian languages on how to do a maize Pfumvudza, it will also explain how farmers can apply the same concept to cash crops such as soya, groundnuts and sunflower, so that farmers can not only meet their basic food requirements, but also have a surplus of crops to sell and meet other family needs, such as school fees and medicine.

We are super excited to be involved in this project and help Foundations for Farming find innovative ways of getting this life changing knowledge to the people that need it most!

/ FUNDING REQUIRED

We are aiming to raise $600 to cover hosting costs and content creation for this project while it is under development for the next year. As the Foundations for Farming office is so close to our Mkushi field office we do not anticipate any additional logistical costs at this stage.
