Steady Progress at Nkolonga!

26 October 2021 / By Gareth

In spite of the intense October heat and many frustrating set-backs it is great to be able to look back and see the progress we have made at Nkolonga Rural Health Post so far. Thanks to the generous donation we received from Tim and Hannah Driffill, we have been able to:

  • Repair, strip and re-paint the window frames
  • Replace all the broken glass panes with new
  • Remove old leaking roofing sheets and replace with new
  • Replace 10 doors and door locks to ensure improved security for the health post
  • Dig up and remove the broken floor in one room and cast a brand new concrete floor
  • Repair and re-apply the rough-casting on the outside of the building.

We have also been able to purchase all the materials required to fix the electrical system and our volunteer electrician begins work on this tomorrow. As you can imagine, the team at Nkolonga cannot wait to have working lights and access to power again, especially when they are serving patients at night.

It bas been great to see the Nkolonga community rally around this project and offer to help in various ways including construction, welding and security. We are also very grateful for the assistance of Chengelo School who have provided volunteer support for carpentry and electrics and come to our rescue when we have run out of materials at a critical stage.

Thank you also to all our Mission Geeks supporters who make this work possible. We still have a way to go, but if all goes as planned, we aim to complete this Stage 1 renovation work before the end of November. This will ensure that the team at Nkolonga have a safe, secure and dry base from which to serve the community during the inevitably busy rainy season.
